I don’t know about your dogs but my dog’s paws get so rough and whenever they need something they paw at me and it hurts because their paw pads are like sandpaper!
So I went on a mission to create a natural balm that was going to not only be healthy for my dogs but actually work!
I have 2 german shepherds and a pit/lab mix (his are the worst), so I go through this stuff pretty regularly. So if you have big dogs you may think about doubling this recipe, but if you’re just wanting to try it out then this is the perfect small jar for that!
Keep in mind that if your dog has really bad cracked paw pads there could be underlying health issues causing that or there could be a chemical that they got into causing their paws to dry out that bad. Rule out environmental factors first and consult a vet if it seems to be a bigger issue! This paw balm is a easy remedy for the rough paws that just get a little dry from heat or ice or just rough surfaces every now and then!
Paw Balm
Equipment
- 1 Double Boiler
- 1 4 oz Jar
- 1 Scale
Materials
- .5 oz Beeswax
- 1.5 oz Coconut Oil
- 1 oz Shea Butter
- 2 Tbsp Vegetable Glycerin
- 3 Tbsp Almond Oil
Instructions
- In a small bowl weigh your beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter one by one and add them to the top of the double boiler. (Place your bowl on the scale, zero it out, and add in the ingredients one by one and either do the math in your head to add it up or pour each ingredient one by one into the top of the double boiler after weighing it.)
- Put water in the bottom of your double boiler (about half way) and turn it on medium/high heat. Placed the top of the double boiler on top once the water is boiling and stir the ingredients until melted.
- Once melted, remove from the heat and add in the vegetable glycerin and almond oil. Stir until completely combined.
- Pour this mixture into the jar and leave it uncovered until hardened -this will take several hours. Once it's hardened you can put the lid on it and store at room temp.
- Rub a little bit on your dogs paws about once a day!
Rub this in as best you can on the paw pads and in between their digits! You could even put socks or dog boots/shoes on afterwards to help keep it on and keep your dog from licking!
